Sixteen

Sunday we woke early. Still not as early as Saskia’s dad. We could hear him clattering about in the kitchen. I went downstairs while Saskia faffed about in the bathroom.

“Good morning, you. Sleep well?”

“Yes, thank you sir.”

“And whose lives are you going to change for the better today?”

I looked at my feet in embarrassment. “We don’t intend to. It just - happens.”

“I know, I know.”

I said, “We want to go and visit James and Lydia if you don’t mind. We’d like to make sure everything went well after the weekend.”

“Hmm. Wouldn’t mind knowing myself. I’ll require a full report - in triplicate.”

Saskia appeared. Rob said, “A dress? Just going to be a normal girl for a change?”

“Yes, Dad. We can’t dress up all the time you know. Mind you, we could, but pocket money would have to increase alarmingly.” She managed to look hopeful.

“And what do you think the chances of that are?”

“Hmm, what with inflation, the cost of living increase, government defence spending, funding for the NHS - err - none?

“The exact figure I had in mind.”

“Apparently we’ll need to provide a full report on James’ situation when we get back, in triplicate,” I said.

Saskia was serious in an instant. “Do you want to come with us, Dad? We don’t mind, do we Saskia?”

I shook my head, “You would be entirely welcome if you want to.”

“Would I do that? No, no. I’ll just wait ‘til you tell me later. I have heard on the grapevine that James might be up for a CBE or an MBE or something. You have not heard that! If he tells you, ok, but not otherwise.”

We both nodded seriously. Rob looked at me and said, “Go and get dressed. Saskia and I will have breakfast ready when you’re done. I expect you’ll need a lift in Dad’s Taxi?”

“You could just lend us the car. Saskia can drive it after all,” said Saskia.

“Perish the thought. There’ll be time enough for that sort of thing when you’re older.”

After breakfast we got into the car and Rob drove us to the Robinsons. “Usual arrangement. Ring me if you’re not coming back for lunch and if Arnold is bringing you home.”

“Will do, Dad.” Saskia gave him a kiss. Jeeves answered the door. “Miss Saskia and Miss Saskia, good morning. Mr James is in the Breakfast Morning Room. Would you like to join him for breakfast?”

“No, thank you, Jeeves. We’ve already had breakfast. Thank you for the kind offer.”

“If you would find your own way, I will at least provide hot chocolate if that would be suitable?”

“Yes, thank you, Jeeves. Most suitable.”

Jeeves vanished towards the kitchen and we went to find James.

“Ahh. I thought it might be you two. Come and sit down. Has Jeeves offered you breakfast?”

“Yes, sir, he has. We’ve already had breakfast but there’s hot chocolate in the offing.”

James laughed, “I think we may have had to lay in extra supplies of the stuff but never mind. Lydia will be along shortly. Why does it take women longer than men in the bathroom?”

“That’s easy.
